Art. I remember always getting those little packets of crayons when my family and I would go out to eat at a chain restaurant. That was one of the first times that I was exposed to the art world. While the crayons may have been the three primary colors, the wheels of imagination began to turn. Through out the years I have always doodled on any paper that was given to me.
The church bulletin was always the culprit on Sunday mornings. Normally my drawings had to do with what the pastor was talking about or what the announcements stated in the bulletin. I would often hand the pastor at the end of the service my artistic masterpiece. I have always enjoyed drawing art but admiring art came to me eventually through school and other people in my life.
In my hometown, a famous artist lived there years ago, you may know that famous artist; his name is Grant Wood. He was the one that created the American Gothic, the famous two people standing in front of a white house. Part of my state enforced art curriculum, this was one of the first paintings that I was able to look deeper at and try to understand what Grant was thinking when he created this famous painting.
I was lucky to also grow up with two amazing artists who attended the same church as me, and they taught art and craft time sometimes in Sunday School. One has murals on certain buildings around our town from a tennis center to a large mural in the African American Museum. The other is a amazing metal artist, he uses scrap metal that others throw away to create flowers, birds and one really large scorpion that protects his art studio.
I was also able to fill my electives in college with Art History classes. I took these classes more because I liked the professor but also learned a ton about different eras in the art world. One of my favorite classes was a Art by Couples class where we looked at famous artist couples and how their art influenced each other.
Art is something that I have learned to appreciate over the years. Art is everywhere I go and everywhere you go. Looking everywhere around us, we will find the art by the greatest art of all time. From Sunrise to Sunset, from Spring to Fall and even in the winter.
